Candle Safety Tips: How to Use Candles Safely in Your Home

Candles can add warmth and ambiance to any room, but it's important to use them safely to prevent accidents and fires. In this blog post, we'll go over some simple candle safety tips to help you enjoy your candles safely in your home.

  1. Always keep an eye on your candle. Never leave a candle burning unattended, especially in a room where children or pets are present. It's also a good idea to keep candles away from flammable materials and open windows.

  2. Use a sturdy candle holder. Make sure that your candle holder is stable and won't tip over easily. Glass candle holders are especially prone to breaking, so be sure to use caution when handling them.

  3. Trim the wick. Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch in length. This will help prevent the flame from getting too large and keep the candle burning evenly.

  4. Don't burn your candle all the way down. When a candle burns down to the bottom, it can create a risk of fire. To prevent this, extinguish the candle when there is about 1/4 inch of wax left.

  5. Extinguish the candle properly. When you're finished using your candle, extinguish it by using a candle snuffer or blowing it out. Never use water to extinguish a candle, as it can cause the hot wax to splatter.

By following these simple candle safety tips, you can enjoy your candles safely and without worry. Remember to always use caution and common sense when using candles in your home.

Candle Workshop

If you are looking for something to do in York, why not check out one of or candle workshops where I go through the basics of candle making? Our first workshop was a success. We had a great group that came out and made their own candles and had a great time.

We are aiming to host a candle workshop at least once a month, more if the request is great enough. You can also book a private party for you and up to 5 of your friends for a hands on class and BYOB setup.

Want to make a candle but don’t want to wait for a class or book a party, There is also the option of walking in and making a candle all on your own and on your own schedule at our Kreative Candle Bar. This is a self guided process where the instructions are written down and you do everything on your own after we get you set up. You can then choose to wait for your candle to cool enough for safe traveling or you can return and pick up later.

It’s been a long month and a half. We wanted to open our store on September 1st, however, turning the store into what we wanted took longer than expected. Here we are, happy to announce, that after much blood(literally), sweat and tears, our grand opening day will be September 23rd. That is a week from now. We still have a week of running around to do. shelves to fill and our sign still needs to go up but we are at the home stretch and by golly we will get there. Until then, here are a few before and after of the store.

Above you can see only some of the stains and such on the walls. The picture really doesn’t highlight all the things we had to do. It was a printing store before so there was ink everywhere. And who puts carpeting in a bathroom???? Can someone say GROSS??!!!

Here are a few pictures, after we painted and changed out the the carpeting. Still not the final images but We will be sure to share those with you after the opening.

We are opening a store front…

We are opening a store…

When we started this business, we knew we eventually wanted to open a store front so that we could be found in a more permanent location. Last year we were at an event almost every weekend during the warm season and it was very taxing with the constant loading and unloading.

Trying to get back to work for me post pandemic has also been very challenging because I wanted to find employment where I could be home when the kids are home so that we wouldn’t have to worry about the cost of childcare. We made the decision that I would just focus solely on growing the business and we came to the conclusion that the next step is to open our own store. A month ago we found a location and we started the process but decided to walk away from the lease. It wasn’t going to allow us the flexibility we needed. Here we are, a month later, and we just signed the lease to a location that will be our new store front. We have some painting and minor renovating to do and then we will be ready to open our doors to the public. Our location will be in the Stoney Brook Shoppette in York PA. We will keep everyone with an opening date.

So you want to make your own candles…

This isn’t going to be a super long post. Definitely not a how to guide, more of a what not to do.

I saw a video the other day that made me so upset. You might have seen it also, or maybe not. Maybe their plan was to upset candle makers in order to draw in more crowd. If that is the case, the post worked.

In the post that I speak of, they melted down a few candle sticks to make some scented jar candles. I wanted to share the 3 main things that I believe was wrong with this video. Some may agree, others may not. I suggest you research after reading this post to form your own opinion based on facts.

  1. In the video, when melting the candles, they melted them over direct heat, not a double boiler system. Wax does have a flashpoint. Melting directly on a stove maximizes the likelihood of causing a fire. This is more likely especially if you are not monitoring your temperature.

  2. They used food dye to color their candle. Food dye is not suitable for candles simply because it is water based. You may get some color, however, you will find that majority of it will sink to the bottom of your candle. In order to get a uniform color in your candles, you should use dyes that are made specifically for candles. They are oil based and therefore will give you an even color dispersion.

  3. Of all the steps that was in this video, this one is the most dangerous and what made me so upset. In the video, they added fragrance to their candles. Now, we love fragrance and we love different varieties. In the video, they used cleaning products as fragrance. I love a clean smelling house, however, using cleaning products in your candles can cause respiratory issues. The chemicals in cleaning products were not meant to be heated up, so when you do so, they release harmful fumes.

I get it, times are hard and we want to cut costs on some of the things we love. However, if you are going to cut costs by doing it yourself, please be safe. Don’t DIY without research. Your cost saving method could cost you more in the long run, especially if you end up in the hospital because of it.

March Meet The Maker

It's March and that means another year of #marchmeetthemaker

Joanne Hawker has created a whole months worth of prompts for creators like us to follow along in an effort to reintroduce ourselves and our brand to you our followers. So here goes...

We are Joedi and Mike, the faces behind the brand. Together we are Liebe Krafted Designs. Many of you guys have been with us since the beginning. We are working on year 2 of being in business.

When it comes to our values, this one stands out above the rest. When we started Liebe Krafted Designs, it was never about putting anyone out of business or showing someone how much better we are.

We genuinely wanted to create. We saw our business as a way to collaborate with other small businesses and form a community.

When we first started making candles, it wasn't successful. We sat on our supplies for almost a year before we decided to give it a go again. That's when we decided to introduce it to everyone. When I started to work with resin, it was never to put another resin artist out of business, it was simply to seal a piece of art and then I decided to experiment. It was never about competition.

As we continue to grow, I hope that we can continue to embrace the philosophy and others might join in on the movement.

We started this journey with an idea and it has been amazing learning and growing. Thank you for being here with us and supporting us through it all. ❤️

Candle Care Guide

Before we begin, I would first like to thank you for purchasing our candle(s). What you hold in your hand is a labor of love, our pride and joy. We didn’t start out making candles, but they have slowly became our niche.

With that being said, we want you to have the best experience possible and to get the most out of your candle. Here are a few tips on how to make that possible.

First things first…. Always, Always, Always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface and never leave your candle unsupervised. After all, we are technically ‘playing with fire’.

“Always burn candles on a heat resistant surface.”

We always want to make sure that our candles are placed away from curtains, table cloth, clothes, or anything flammable. Also, be sure to keep away from the edge of the table where it can be easily knocked off or pulled off by a child or animal.

Next tip is to trim your wick. It is recommended to trim your wick to approximately 1/4th of an inch before lighting. This helps you get a nice clean and and even longer burn.

Now that we have done all that, it is now time to light and enjoy your candle.

However, we just have one last tip before we go.

Have you ever light a candle, blew it out and the next time you light it, no matter what, it doesn’t really want to burn? If you have, Then you did not burn your candle long enough. The first burn of your candle needs to burn for about 3 hours in order to create a melt pool.

You can think of the melt pool as a candle’s muscle memory. You want to give your candle time for a muscle memory to develop, so to speak.

We hope that these steps have helped you, we want you to enjoy every bit of your candle from us. We enjoyed making them and we just want you to have the opportunity to experience the love that we have put into each and everyone. Again, Thank you so much for your support. - Liebe
